Rush Hour Samaritans

by Antony Davies

It’s rush hour, and Ben is hurting. He’s been hit by another car, the driver’s side of his Mercedes caved in and the car that hit him has spun off the road. There’s blood on the other car’s windscreen from the inside.

There’s blood on Ben’s windscreen too.

He moves, sees a queue of cars beginning to form. He hears honking in the distance. Someone gets out of an Audi. That someone is wearing an expensive suit, even more expensive than Ben’s, and nice shoes and a gold pin for his tie. He leans in and speaks to Ben, asks if he’s okay, but Ben cannot reply as there’s blood in his throat and knives in his lungs.

The well-dressed man shouts to another, “Hey, come on give us a hand here.” And someone shouts back “Fuck you,” and there’s another barrage of horns.

Then someone else appears, a guy with tattoos and wearing a football shirt. Together they lean against the battered Merc and begin to push. Metal scraps against the tyres, but they continue to push until it is safe at the side of the road.

The men leave the Mercedes and from Ben’s awkward angle inside he sees them return to their vehicles, the brand new Audi TT and a piece of crap Volkswaggen.

They drive away. The traffic jam begins to move and nobody else stops for Ben.

That’s okay, he thinks simply. They probably have some place else to be.
